Technical Description
P0372 is set when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects an insufficient number of pulses from the high-resolution timing reference signal 'A' over a specific period of engine rotation. This high-definition signal (often 360 or 720 pulses per revolution) is used for precise injection and ignition timing control. If the pulse count falls below the calibrated threshold, the ECU loses fine-tuning capability. This can trigger a fail-safe mode, as the engine can no longer guarantee optimal combustion timing, potentially leading to hard starts or stalling.
Possible Causes
Faulty high-resolution optical sensor or crankshaft/camshaft position sensor
Electromagnetic interference (EMI) from ignition wires or alternator affecting the signal
Damaged reluctor ring or debris/oil contamination on the sensor face
Wiring issues such as high resistance, oxidation, or intermittent open circuits
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- 2. 3. Use an oscilloscope to probe the signal wire; look for a clean square wave. 4. 5. If replacement is necessary, clear codes and perform a drive cycle to confirm the high-resolution signal remains stable.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
