Technical Description
P0381 is a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) for the Glow Plug/Heater Indicator Circuit. This code is triggered when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects an electrical malfunction in the circuit that controls the glow plug warning lamp in the instrument cluster. On modern vehicles, this is often a communication error over the CAN bus between the ECU and the Cluster, while on older vehicles, it involves a direct ground or power signal to the bulb. The ECU monitors the circuit for open, short to ground, or short to voltage. This fault indicates that the visual confirmation for the pre-heating process is compromised.
Possible Causes
Defective glow plug relay or control module not reporting status
Wiring open or short circuit between the ECU and the instrument cluster
Faulty instrument cluster or burnt-out indicator bulb (on older vehicles)
Corrosion in the fuse box or power distribution center related to pre-heating

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
