Technical Description
P0383 is a generic diagnostic trouble code (DTC) indicating that the Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a low voltage condition in the Glow Plug Control Module (GPCM) control circuit. The ECM manages the pre-heating process by sending a signal (often PWM) to the GPCM. If the feedback voltage or the sensed voltage on the monitor line stays below a calibrated threshold (typically indicating a short to ground or a failed driver), the ECM sets P0383. This monitors the communication and command line between the engine computer and the dedicated glow plug relay/module.
Possible Causes
Short to ground in the wiring harness between the ECM and GPCM
Faulty Glow Plug Control Module (GPCM/Relay)
Corroded or loose connectors causing signal degradation
Internal ECM failure affecting the glow plug control driver

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
