Technical Description
P0394 is a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) indicating that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected an intermittent or erratic signal from the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor 'B' on Bank 2. Bank 2 is the side of the engine that does not contain cylinder #1. Sensor 'B' typically refers to the exhaust camshaft. Under SAE standards, the ECU monitors the frequency and voltage of the signal; if it falls outside of calibration parameters sporadically, the code is triggered. This signal is critical for fuel injection timing, ignition spark, and Variable Valve Timing (VVT) operations.
Possible Causes
Loose connection or oxidized terminals in the camshaft sensor connector.
Failing camshaft position sensor (internal thermal failure).
Damaged wiring harness (chaffing against engine block or chassis).
Improperly installed or damaged reluctor wheel (tone ring) on the camshaft.
Excessive timing chain/belt play causing signal deviation.

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
