Technical Description
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0408 is triggered when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects an abnormally high voltage signal from the EGR valve position sensor 'B' (typically exceeding 4.8V). This condition usually indicates a short to voltage in the signal wire or a loss of the sensor's ground connection. The EGR system recirculates exhaust gases into the intake manifold to lower combustion temperatures and reduce NOx emissions. If the ECU cannot verify the valve's actual position due to a 'High' circuit fault, it will typically enter a fail-safe mode and disable EGR operation.
Possible Causes
Defective EGR valve position sensor (often integrated into the valve)
Short circuit to 5V reference or 12V in the sensor wiring harness
Open circuit in the sensor ground wire
Internal ECU fault or software glitch
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check the EGR valve connector for corrosion, bent pins, or moisture. Inspect the wiring harness for signs of chafing or heat damage.
- Voltage Testing (Multimeter): Verify a steady 5V reference signal to the sensor. Check the ground circuit (should be near 0 Ohms to battery negative). Measure the signal wire; if it is stuck at 5V, there is likely a short to power or an open ground.
- Advanced Diagnosis: Use a scan tool to monitor EGR Position Live Data. Perform a bi-directional command to move the valve and observe if the voltage changes linearly.
- Component Replacement: If wiring and reference voltages are correct, replace the EGR valve unit. Clear codes and perform the required adaptation/relearn procedure.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
