Technical Description
P040B is stored when the Engine Control Module (ECU/PCM) detects an implausible signal from the EGR Temperature Sensor 'A'. This sensor monitors the temperature of the exhaust gases being recirculated into the intake manifold. The ECU uses this data to verify EGR cooler efficiency and manage NOx emissions. The 'Range/Performance' designation indicates that while the sensor is communicating, its voltage output is outside of the pre-defined logical mapping for the current engine load and thermal state.
Possible Causes
Soot or carbon buildup on the sensor tip
Faulty EGR temperature sensor (internal resistance drift)
Damaged wiring or corroded connectors near the high-heat exhaust zone
Clogged or inefficient EGR cooler
Faulty Engine Control Unit (ECU) software or hardware issue

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
