Technical Description
P0411 is triggered when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects that the air flow in the Secondary Air Injection (SAI) system is not meeting the expected parameters during activation. The SAI system pumps fresh air into the exhaust manifold during cold starts to accelerate catalyst light-off and reduce HC and CO emissions. The ECU monitors flow indirectly via the oxygen (O2) sensor; when the pump is active, the O2 sensor voltage should drop significantly due to high oxygen content. If the sensor feedback does not indicate a lean condition (typically <0.1V) within the calibrated timeframe, the P0411 code is set.
Possible Causes
Faulty Secondary Air Injection pump (mechanical failure or internal motor fault)
Leaking or clogged air hoses/pipes (e.g., cracked plastic lines)
Faulty SAI combi valve (check valve) stuck in the closed position
Blown fuse or faulty SAI pump relay
Clogged air passages in the cylinder head (common on certain V6/V8 engines)
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check all plastic hoses and rubber connectors for cracks or disconnections. Check the SAI pump fuse (typically 30-50A).
- Actuation Test: Use a diagnostic tool to command the pump ON. If the pump fails to run, check for 12-14V at the pump connector.
- Component Test (Pump): If voltage is present but the pump is silent, check internal resistance (should be 0.5-5 Ohms). If Open Loop (OL), replace the pump.
- Component Test (Valve): Verify that the combi valve opens when vacuum or an electrical signal is applied. If the valve is carboned up or stuck, clean or replace.
- Port Cleaning: If cylinder head passages are clogged, mechanical cleaning or decarbonization may be necessary.
