Technical Description
P0424 indicates that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected that the heated catalyst on Bank 1 is not reaching its required operating temperature within a calibrated time limit. Catalytic converters require high temperatures (typically above 300-400°C) for optimal chemical reduction of pollutants like Hydrocarbons (HC), Carbon Monoxide (CO), and Nitrogen Oxides (NOx). The ECU monitors this via pre- and post-catalyst oxygen sensors and compares the heater circuit duty cycle to the expected temperature rise.
Possible Causes
Faulty heated catalyst (internal heating element failure)
Faulty oxygen sensor (post-catalytic O2 sensor reporting incorrect values)
Damaged wiring or corrosion in the connector for the catalyst heater circuit
Faulty exhaust gas temperature sensor or ECU software glitch

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
