Technical Description
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0425 is triggered when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects an electrical malfunction in the Catalyst Temperature Sensor circuit (Sensor 1, Bank 1). This sensor, typically an NTC thermistor, monitors the operating temperature of the catalytic converter to ensure it operates within an efficient and safe range. The ECM uses this data to prevent thermal damage and to manage emission strategies. If the voltage signal deviates from the calibrated range (e.g., shorts to ground or open circuit), the ECM logs P0425 and may enter a protection mode.

Faulty catalyst temperature sensor (internal open or short circuit)
Damaged wiring harness (chafed against exhaust or heat shield)
Corrosion or loose pins in the sensor connector
Faulty Engine Control Unit (ECU) or software issue
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check the sensor and wiring for burn marks, melted insulation, or mechanical damage near the exhaust system.
- Connector Check: Inspect for corrosion or backing-out pins. Clean with contact cleaner if necessary.
- Electrical Testing: Measure the sensor's resistance using a multimeter. Compare with OEM specs (typically several hundred kOhms at ambient temp). Check for 5V reference voltage and ground at the connector with ignition on.
- Advanced Diagnosis: Monitor 'Live Data' for the temperature sensor. The values should rise steadily with engine runtime without erratic spikes or 'flat-lining' at maximum/minimum values.
- Replacement: Replace the sensor if resistance values are out of spec or if and open circuit is confirmed.
