Technical Description
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0429 is triggered when the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) detects an electrical malfunction within the catalyst heater control circuit for Bank 1. To reduce cold-start emissions, some vehicles utilize an electric catalyst heater to reach 'light-off' temperature more efficiently. The PCM monitors the heater's performance by checking voltage drops or duty-cycle feedback. If the resistance is out of specified range or the circuit is open/shorted, the code is stored.
Possible Causes
Faulty heater element integrated within the catalytic converter
Wiring issues (chafed insulation or corrosion in connectors)
Defective catalyst heater relay
Internal PCM fault

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
