Technical Description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) monitors the oxygen storage capacity of the catalytic converter using upstream (Sensor 1) and downstream (Sensor 2) oxygen sensors. A healthy catalyst will show a steady voltage signal from the downstream sensor (typically 0.6–0.7V). If the catalyst is degraded, the downstream sensor signal will begin to switch rapidly, mimicking the upstream sensor's switching pattern. This indicates that the catalyst's ability to reduce emissions (HC, CO, and NOx) has fallen below the required threshold. Bank 2 refers to the side of the engine that does not contain cylinder number one.
Possible Causes
Degraded or faulty catalytic converter (Bank 2)
Faulty downstream oxygen sensor (Bank 2, Sensor 2)
Exhaust leak upstream of or near the catalyst
Engine misfires or incorrect fuel trim causing catalyst damage

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
