Technical Description
P043A is set when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects an electrical circuit malfunction or an out-of-range signal from the Catalyst Temperature Sensor 2 on Bank 2. This sensor, often an RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector) like a PT200, monitors the exhaust gas temperature to evaluate the efficiency of the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system and prevent thermal damage. If the voltage signal drops below or exceeds calibrated thresholds (typically reflecting an open circuit or short to ground/voltage), the ECU triggers the MIL and may enter a derated protection mode.

Faulty Catalyst Temperature Sensor (internal open circuit)
Damaged wiring or frayed lines near the high-heat exhaust system
Corrosion or loose connection in the sensor connector
Faulty Engine Control Module (ECM/ECU)
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check the wiring for sensor 2, bank 2. Look for melted insulation or breaks due to extreme exhaust heat.
- Voltage Test: With ignition ON, check the connector for a 5V reference signal and a clean ground connection.
- Resistance Test: Unplug the sensor and measure resistance across the terminals. Typically, at ambient temp (20°C/68°F), it should read approx. 200-220 Ohms. Infinite resistance indicates an open circuit.
- Live Data: Use a scan tool to monitor sensor 2 temperature. A static reading of -40°C or maximum scale indicates a circuit fault.
- Component Replacement: Replace the sensor if resistance values are out of OEM specification.
Mechanic's Tip
