Technical Description
P043D indicates that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected a voltage signal from the Catalyst Temperature Sensor (Bank 2, Sensor 1) that is higher than the maximum calibrated limit. This sensor monitors the catalytic converter's operating temperature to ensure optimal emissions reduction and to prevent thermal damage. A 'Circuit High' condition typically points to an open circuit, a blown fuse (if applicable to the sensor heater/logic), or a failed sensor with infinite resistance. The ECU interprets a voltage signal near the 5V reference as a high circuit fault. Bank 2 refers to the bank of the engine that does not contain cylinder #1.
Possible Causes
Faulty Catalyst Temperature Sensor (internal open circuit)
Damaged wiring or corrosion in the connector (open circuit)
Poor ground connection to the sensor
Faulty Engine Control Unit (ECU)
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- VISUAL INSPECTION: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the Bank 2 temperature sensor. Look for melted wires (due to exhaust heat) or corroded connectors.
- VOLTAGE TEST: Disconnect the sensor and measure with the ignition ON. Verify 5V reference voltage and a solid ground. If 5V is present at the connector but the fault persists when jumped, investigate the signal return line.
- RESISTANCE TEST: Measure the sensor's internal resistance using a Multimeter. An 'OL' (Open Line) reading indicates a failed sensor. Compare readings with the Bank 1 sensor if possible.
- ADVANCED DIAGNOSIS: Use a scan tool to monitor Live Data. A fixed extreme value (e.g., -40°F or 2000°F) confirms a circuit fault.
- REPLACEMENT: If wiring is intact and the sensor fails resistance testing, replace the Catalyst Temperature Sensor (Bank 2, Sensor 1).
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
