Technical Description
P043F is a generic OBD-II diagnostic trouble code indicating that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected a flow restriction within the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) system's leak detection pump (LDP) or its ventilation circuit. During an EVAP monitor self-test, the ECU monitors the pressure change; if the vacuum decays too slowly or a high resistance is measured during the vent phase, it indicates a blockage, typically in the LDP filter, the vent hose, or the charcoal canister itself. This failure prevents the system from accurately performing leak tests as required by emissions standards.
Possible Causes
Clogged Leak Detection Pump (LDP) filter
Blockage or debris (insect nests) in the EVAP vent hose VIDA.
Faulty Leak Detection Pump (internal mechanical failure)
Internal restriction or charcoal migration within the EVAP canister
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check the vent hoses leading from the charcoal canister to the atmosphere. Look for kinks, mud, or spider webs/insect nests.
- Filter Inspection: Locate the LDP filter (usually near the rear subframe or wheel well). Remove the filter and check for clogging; replace if necessary.
- Functional Testing: Use a scan tool to command the EVAP vent solenoid/pump. Verify 12V supply and check for normal current draw (typically below 1.0A).
- Component Replacement: Clear the vent lines with low-pressure air. If the restriction persists within the pump or canister, replace the faulty unit.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
