Technical Description
P0444 is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects an open circuit condition in the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) purge control valve circuit. The purge valve is a solenoid used to meter fuel vapors from the charcoal canister into the intake manifold. The ECM monitors the circuit for continuity. If the ECM commands the valve 'ON' and detects no current flow (high resistance/open), the fault code is stored. This is a purely electrical fault monitoring the circuit between the ECM and the solenoid.
Possible Causes
Internal open circuit in the EVAP purge solenoid
Corrosion or poor connection at the solenoid connector
Wiring harness break or short to ground between the ECM and the valve
Failed Engine Control Module (ECM) or blown fuse in the power supply circuit

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
