Technical Description
P044A is a generic diagnostic trouble code (DTC) indicating a circuit malfunction in the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor 'C'. The ECU monitors this sensor to verify EGR cooler efficiency and flow rates. If the voltage signal returned to the ECU is outside calibrated limits (typically defaulting to a range outside 0.2V to 4.8V) or fails to show a correlation with engine load and cooling, the code is stored. Sensor 'C' specifically identifies a third temperature probe in the emission system, common in complex multi-stage EGR systems found in modern diesel engines.
Possible Causes
Faulty EGR temperature sensor (internal open circuit or short)
Damaged wiring or corroded connectors near the EGR cooler (high heat exposure)
Clogged or restricted EGR cooler causing abnormal temperature readings
Faulty Engine Control Unit (ECU) or corrupted software calibration

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
