Technical Description
P0457 is a specific code within the EVAP system monitor logic that occurs when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects a significant vacuum or pressure loss immediately following a fuel level increase (refueling event). Unlike P0455, the P0457 code is logic-based, correlating the refueling with the failure of the gross leak test. The ECU monitors the Fuel Tank Pressure (FTP) sensor while the vent and purge valves are closed/modulated to verify integrity. A rapid decay in pressure suggests a major leak, typically associated with the fuel filler cap.
Possible Causes
Fuel cap is loose, damaged, or missing
Damaged or dried out fuel cap gasket
Damage to the filler neck or rust on the sealing surface
Faulty Fuel Tank Pressure (FTP) sensor providing incorrect readings
Large leak in EVAP hoses or charcoal canister near the tank
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- VISUAL INSPECTION: Remove the fuel cap and inspect the gasket. Clean the filler neck sealing surface. Tighten the cap until it clicks. Clear the code and road test.
- MEASUREMENT (FTP SENSOR): Use a scan tool to monitor the Fuel Tank Pressure sensor data. At atmospheric pressure, it typically reads around 2.5V. During a vacuum test, voltage should shift linearly.
- ADVANCED DIAGNOSIS: Perform an EVAP smoke test. Inject smoke through the EVAP service port to identify leaks at the cap, filler neck, or vent lines.
- COMPONENT REPLACEMENT: If the leak persists after tightening, replace the fuel cap with an OEM part. Cheap aftermarket caps often fail to seal correctly during the EVAP monitor self-test.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
