Technical Description
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P045D is set when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects an abnormally high voltage signal within the Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) sensor control circuit for Bank 1, Sensor 3. EGT sensors are critical for monitoring the temperature of the exhaust stream to ensure proper regeneration of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and to prevent thermal damage to the catalytic converters or turbocharger. A 'high' circuit condition typically indicates an open circuit, a poor ground connection, or a short to voltage (12V/5V reference), causing the ECU to perceive an out-of-range temperature value.
Possible Causes
Faulty Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) sensor - internal open circuit
Corrosion or poor pin tension in the sensor connector
Wiring harness damage, broken signal wire, or short to voltage
Faulty Engine Control Unit (ECU)
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check the connector and harness at sensor 3 for signs of heat damage, corrosion, or frayed wires.
- Resistance Test (Ohm): Disconnect the sensor and measure resistance across the terminals. At 20°C (68°F), it typically reads between 200-500 Ohms. An infinite reading (OL) indicates an internal open circuit.
- Voltage Check: Verify the reference voltage (usually 5V) from the ECU at the sensor connector with the ignition on.
- Live Data Analysis: Use a scan tool to monitor EGT Bank 1 Sensor 3. Static extreme values (e.g., -40°C or 1200°C) confirm a circuit fault.
- Replacement: Replace the EGT sensor if resistance is out of spec or if the circuit fault persists after wiring verification.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
