Technical Description
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0460 is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects an implausible signal from the fuel level sensor. This occurs when the actual sensor output does not change over a specific distance driven or time elapsed, or if the voltage remains outside the expected window (typically 0.5V to 4.5V). The ECM monitors the consumption rate vs. sensor feedback. If the values don't match, the code is triggered. This fault impacts the fuel gauge accuracy and can inhibit diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration, as the system requires a minimum fuel level to safely initiate the burn-off process.
Possible Causes
Faulty fuel level sensor (fuel sender unit) due to internal wear or stuck float
Wiring issues (corrosion, open circuit, or short to ground) between tank and cluster/ECU
Damaged or deformed fuel tank physically obstructing the float movement
Software glitch in the instrument cluster or internal ECU failure

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
