Technical Description
P0461 is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM/PCM) detects that the fuel level sensor 'A' signal is not changing as expected based on vehicle mileage and fuel consumption calculated by the fuel injection system (rationality check). Most ECMs monitor the fuel level over a specific distance; if the level remains static while fuel is being consumed, or if the sensor output jumps erratically, the code triggers. The sensor typically operates as a potentiometer with a range from 0.5V up to 4.5V. This is usually a two-trip logic code, meaning the fault must be present across two consecutive driving cycles to illuminate the MIL.
Possible Causes
Mechanically stuck fuel level float inside the tank (due to debris or damage)
Faulty fuel level sensor (internal break in the resistive track)
Wiring issues (corrosion in connectors or high resistance in the signal wire)
Defective instrument cluster or network failure (CAN-bus communication issues between BCM/ICM and ECM)
Improper parameter programming after instrument cluster replacement
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check the connector at the top of the fuel tank for corrosion. Inspect the tank for physical damage (dents) that could bind the float arm.
- Measurement: Use a multimeter to measure the sensor resistance (Ohms). Typical values range from 40-250 Ohms. Compare the reading with the actual fuel volume.
- Advanced Diagnosis: Use a scan tool to monitor 'Fuel Level %' in live data. Rock the vehicle to see if the value fluctuates. In case of suspected CAN issues, check communication between ECM and the instrument cluster.
- Component Replacement: If resistance is out of spec or does not change linearly, replace the fuel sending unit/pump module.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
