Technical Description
P0463 is stored when the Engine Control Module (ECM/PCM) detects a voltage signal from the fuel level sensor that exceeds the calibrated limit (typically above 4.8V) for a set duration. The sensor is a variable resistor (potentiometer) attached to a float. As the fuel level changes, the resistance changes. A 'High' input signal usually indicates an open circuit or a faulty sensor assembly, as an open circuit causes the signal voltage to pull up to the reference voltage. This affects fuel gauge accuracy and DTE (Distance to Empty) calculations transmitted via CAN bus.

Faulty fuel level sensor (internal open circuit in the resistor track)
Wiring harness break or loose connector leading to the fuel pump/sender unit
Damaged fuel tank physically jamming the float arm in an extreme position
Faulty instrument cluster or PCM software error

Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check the wiring harness and connectors at the fuel tank for rodent damage, corrosion, or backing out pins.
- Voltage Testing: Check for 5V reference voltage and a solid ground at the sensor connector with the ignition on.
- Resistance Testing: Measure the resistance (Ohms) of the sensor directly. Common values range from 40 to 250 Ohms. An 'O.L' (Open Loop) reading confirms a faulty sensor.
- Replacement: If wiring and grounds are OK but sensor resistance is out of spec, replace the fuel level sending unit (often part of the fuel pump assembly).
