Technical Description
P0464 is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) detects an erratic, intermittent, or unstable signal from fuel level sensor unit 'A'. The sensor uses a variable resistor (potentiometer) to convert fuel level into a voltage signal. If the signal voltage jumps rapidly or deviates from the expected range for a pre-defined period, the ECU interprets this as a circuit fault. This often points towards a physical defect in the wiper arm of the sending unit or a connection issue in the wiring harness. This code can also affect emission strategies, as the EVAP system monitor requires a stable fuel level between 15% and 85% to execute.
Possible Causes
Worn resistor tracks on the fuel level sending unit
Loose connection or corrosion at the fuel pump/sender connector
Damaged wiring harness (chafed wires or intermittent short to ground)
Faulty instrument cluster or internal ECU failure

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
