Technical Description
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P046E is triggered when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects an erratic or intermittent signal from the NOx sensor located upstream of the SCR catalyst (Bank 1, Sensor 1). The NOx sensor is a 'smart' sensor with its own internal controller communicating via the CAN high/low lines. The ECM monitors the sensor output and compares it against predicted NOx levels based on engine operating conditions. If the signal noise exceeds a calibrated threshold or if the values deviate illogically from the engine model, the P046E code is stored. This disruption prevents precise closed-loop control of the Reductant (DEF/AdBlue) injection system.

Corrosion or poor pin tension in the NOx sensor connector
Damaged wiring harness (chafing) affecting CAN-bus or power supply lines

- Visual Inspection: Check the NOx sensor connector for corrosion (very common) and inspect the wiring harness along the chassis for damage.
- Voltage Testing: Verify the sensor has proper power supply (usually 12V/24V) and a clean ground. Test CAN-bus resistance (typically 60 Ohms in the circuit).
- Advanced Diagnosis: Perform a NOx sensor health test using a diagnostic scanner. Monitor live data during a test drive; the sensor should react instantly to throttle changes.
- Replacement: If wiring is intact but the signal remains erratic, replace the NOx sensor and its dedicated control module. Post-replacement, perform the adaptation or 'reset' procedure using an OEM-capable tool.
