Technical Description
P046F is a diagnostic code monitored by the Engine Control Unit (ECU) during deceleration fuel cut-off (DFCO) stages. When fuel injection is cut, the ECU expects the NOx sensor to report values consistent with ambient air (~20.9% Oxygen and near 0 ppm NOx). If the sensor fails to reach these values within a specific timeframe or stays outside of calibrated thresholds, the signal is deemed implausible. This typically indicates sensor degradation (aging) or contamination of the sensing element.
Possible Causes
Faulty NOx sensor Bank 1 (element poisoning or degradation)
Soot accumulation on the sensor tip
Exhaust leak upstream of the NOx sensor (introducing false air)
Wiring issues or poor ground connection to the NOx sensor control module

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
