Technical Description
P0471 is an OBD-II generic code that indicates a range/performance issue with the Exhaust Gas Pressure Sensor 'A' circuit. The ECU monitors the feedback voltage from this sensor to determine the backpressure in the exhaust manifold. During 'key-on engine-off' (KOEO) conditions, the ECU compares the exhaust pressure reading with the Barometric (BARO) or Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor. If the sensor reading deviates from these reference values or remains static during engine operation, the ECU triggers the code. This is critical for controlling VGT (Variable Geometry Turbo) vanes and DPF regeneration cycles.
Possible Causes
Clogged pressure tube/hose between exhaust manifold and sensor (carbon buildup)
Faulty exhaust pressure sensor (internal failure)
Exhaust leak upstream of the sensor
Wiring harness issues (chafed wires or corrosion in connectors)

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
