Technical Description
P0472 is an OBD-II generic code indicating that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected a voltage signal from the Exhaust Back Pressure (EBP) sensor that is below the calibrated minimum threshold (typically below 0.2V to 0.5V). This sensor is a feedback device that measures the pressure in the exhaust manifold. The ECU uses this data to control VGT (Variable Geometry Turbo) vanes and EGR flow. A low signal voltage usually signifies a short to ground in the signal circuit, an open circuit, or a complete sensor failure. In many systems, this sensor's value is compared against the MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) and BARO sensors at key-on to verify calibration.
Possible Causes
Faulty Exhaust Back Pressure (EBP) sensor (internal short or membrane failure)
Wiring issues, specifically a short to ground on the signal wire
Corroded or loose electrical connectors at the sensor
Failed Engine Control Module (ECM/ECU) or loss of 5V reference voltage
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check the sensor connector for corrosion or backed-out pins. Inspect the wiring harness for heat damage near the exhaust manifold.
- Voltage Check: Disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter to verify a 5V reference signal and a solid ground with the ignition on.
- Signal Diagnosis: Using a scan tool or multimeter, check the signal return wire. At Key-On-Engine-Off (KOEO), signal should be near 0.8V-1.0V. If pinned at 0V, the circuit is open or shorted to ground.
- Tube Inspection: Inspect the sensor tube for soot blockage or leaks, although P0472 is primarily electrical.
- Component Replacement: Replace the Exhaust Pressure Sensor if the circuit tests okay but signal output remains out of range.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
