Technical Description
P0474 is triggered when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects an intermittent or erratic signal from the Exhaust Gas Pressure sensor 'A'. This sensor measures the pressure in the exhaust manifold, which the ECU uses to manage EGR flow and VGT (Variable Geometry Turbo) vane positioning. Unlike a steady high or low voltage fault, this code suggests a flaky signal caused by loose connections, intermittent wiring faults, or internal sensor failure. It can significantly impact DPF regeneration cycles and turbocharger efficiency.
Possible Causes
Clogged or soot-filled pressure tube/hose between manifold and sensor
Loose connection or corrosion in the sensor connector terminals
Faulty Exhaust Pressure Sensor (internal intermittent fault)
Chafed or damaged wiring harness near heat sources
Internal ECU hardware or software fault
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Inspect the line/tube connecting the sensor to the exhaust manifold. Remove it and check for carbon/soot blockage.
- Electrical Test: Check the connector for corrosion or bent pins. Verify a stable 5V reference signal and a solid ground with a multimeter.
- Live Data Analysis: Use a scan tool to monitor EBP vs. Atmospheric pressure with engine off (should be approx. equal/1 Bar). Monitor voltage while wiggling the harness.
- Vibration Test: Gently tap the sensor while monitoring data to check for internal intermittent failure.
- Component Replacement: Replace the sensor if the tube is clear and wiring is verified. Perform a sensor adaptation/relearn if required by the manufacturer.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
