Technical Description
P0477 is set when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects that the voltage in the exhaust pressure control valve (EPC) circuit is below the calibrated threshold. This valve is typically used in diesel applications to restrict exhaust flow, thereby increasing engine load to accelerate warm-up in cold conditions. The ECU monitors the circuit via a feedback loop; a short to ground or an open circuit in the solenoid wiring will drop the voltage, triggering the DTC. This failure can impact cold start driveability and thermal management strategies.
Possible Causes
Short to ground in the wiring harness to the EPC valve
Faulty Exhaust Pressure Control valve (solenoid failure)
High resistance or oxidation in connectors
Internal Engine Control Unit (ECU) failure

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
