Technical Description
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0481 indicates a malfunction in the cooling fan 2 control circuit. The Engine Control Module (ECM) monitors the relay or control module for the secondary (high speed) cooling fan. If the ECM detects an open circuit, short to ground, or short to voltage when the fan is commanded on or off, it triggers P0481. This circuit is vital for maintaining engine temperature during high loads or AC operation. Lack of fan operation can lead to overheating and AC performance issues.
Possible Causes
Faulty cooling fan relay (Relay 2/High Speed)
Wiring harness damage or corroded connectors
Defective cooling fan motor (internal open or high resistance)
Engine Control Unit (ECU) internal failure or software issue

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
