Technical Description
P0487 is stored when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects an electrical malfunction in the EGR throttle control circuit. This 'throttle' is not the traditional accelerator-linked butterfly valve, but an intake manifold flap used to create a vacuum differential that forces exhaust gases into the intake stream. The ECU manages this via a Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) signal. If the feedback voltage from the actuator position sensor does not match the command signal, or if there is an open circuit/high resistance, the fault is registered. This system is critical for NOx reduction and DPF regeneration cycles.
Possible Causes
Wiring harness issues or open circuit in the throttle actuator control circuit\n- Likely: Failed EGR throttle actuator (internal motor or position sensor failure)\n- Possible: Excessive carbon buildup causing mechanical binding of the butterfly valve\n- Rare: Corroded pins in the ECU connector or actuator plug
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check wiring harness and connectors for signs of chafing, corrosion, or backing out of pins. \n2. Electrical Testing: Verify power supply (typically 12V for the motor, 5V reference for the sensor) and ground integrity. \n3. Mechanical Check: Ensure the throttle plate moves freely. \n4. Component Replacement: If electrical signals are within spec but the actuator fails a bidirectional test via scanner, replace the EGR throttle actuator assembly.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
