Technical Description
P0492 is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that the Secondary Air Injection (SAI) system is not delivering enough fresh air to the exhaust stream of Bank 2. The SAI system's purpose is to inject air into the exhaust manifold during cold starts to promote the oxidation of HC and CO, rapidly heating the catalytic converter to light-off temperature. The ECM monitors the Pre-catalyst Oxygen sensors during SAI activation; if the voltage does not drop significantly (indicating a lean condition), the code is triggered.
Possible Causes
Clogged air passages in the cylinder head (carbon buildup)
Faulty Secondary Air Injection Solenoid or Check Valve (Combi-valve)
Vacuum leaks or cracked/discharged air supply hoses
Failed Secondary Air Pump or relay (usually affects both banks simultaneously)
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check all hoses and plastic pipes for cracks or heat damage. Ensure the SAI pump fuse is intact.
- Component Test: Use a scan tool to command the SAI pump ON. Verify the pump runs and delivers strong airflow. Typical current draw is 30-50A.
- Vacuum Testing: Check if the Bank 2 Combi-valve opens when vacuum (approx. 15-20 inHg) is applied. If the valve is stuck or carbon-fouled, replace it.
- Flow Diagnosis: Disconnect the supply hose to Bank 2. If air reaches the valve but not the exhaust stream, the cylinder head ports are likely clogged with carbon.
- Repair: Perform carbon cleaning of the head passages if necessary, or replace a faulty solenoid/check valve.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
