Technical Description
The P0493 diagnostic trouble code (DTC) indicates a Fan Overspeed condition. This occurs when the Engine Control Module (ECM) monitors the cooling fan speed sensor and determines that the fan speed exceeds the commanded speed. This is primarily applicable to vehicles equipped with an electronically controlled viscous fan clutch. The ECM uses a pulse width modulated (PWM) signal to control the fan speed and monitors feedback via a speed sensor. If the clutch assembly fails internally (mechanical seizure) or if the control circuit is shorted, the fan will rotate at full engine speed, causing excessive noise and parasitic load.
Possible Causes
Mechanical failure of the fan clutch (seized/locked internally)
Faulty fan speed sensor
Short to voltage in the fan clutch control circuit wiring
Corrupt software or internal Engine Control Module (ECM) fault

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
