Technical Description
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0495 is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that the radiator cooling fan speed is higher than commanded. The ECM monitors fan speed via a feedback signal (usually PWM or a Hall-effect sensor) from the fan motor or fan clutch assembly. If the actual RPM exceeds the target RPM by a calibrated threshold (typically >10-20% over a specific duration), the ECM triggers the code. This fault indicates a potential short circuit to voltage in the control circuit or a mechanical failure of the fan clutch electronics.
Possible Causes
Faulty fan clutch (viscous-electronic) or fan control module
Short to voltage (B+) in the fan control or signal circuit
Faulty Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor providing erratic readings
Internal ECM software fault or CAN bus communication issues with the fan module

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
