Technical Description
P04A7 is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects a lower-than-expected voltage in the circuit for Exhaust Pressure Control Valve 'B'. This valve is primarily used in modern diesel systems to regulate exhaust backpressure, which in turn controls EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) flow or accelerates engine warm-up during cold starts. The valve is typically managed via a PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) signal. If the ECM commands the solenoid but the voltage drop across the circuit indicates a short to ground or an open circuit on the control side, this DTC is stored. This directly impacts engine efficiency and emission levels (NOx).
Possible Causes
Faulty exhaust pressure control valve/solenoid (internal short)
Damaged wiring (chafed insulation against chassis causing short to ground)
Oxidized or loose connectors at the valve or ECU
Faulty Engine Control Unit (ECU) failing to drive the circuit correctly

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
