Technical Description
P04AA is a generic OBD-II diagnostic trouble code (DTC) indicating an open circuit within the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve B control loop. The Engine Control Unit (ECU) monitors the continuity and resistance of the circuit. If the ECU detects an interruption (open circuit) or infinite resistance when attempting to actuate the valve via a PWM signal, it sets this code. This failure prevents the ECU from managing exhaust gas re-entry into the combustion chamber, resulting in higher NOx emissions and potentially triggering a Limp Mode to protect engine components.
Possible Causes
Wiring open circuit or corrosion in the EGR Valve B connector
Faulty EGR Valve B (internal electrical failure in coil/actuator)
Faulty EGR control relay (model specific)
Internal Engine Control Unit (ECU) failure

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
