Technical Description
The P0551 code is set when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects that the signal from the Power Steering Pressure (PSP) sensor is outside the expected range or is not correlating correctly with other engine parameters like RPM and vehicle speed. The PSP sensor is a transducer located in the high-pressure line of the power steering system. Its primary role is to monitor the hydraulic load on the engine during steering maneuvers. When high pressure is detected (e.g., during low-speed parking maneuvers), the ECU adjusts the idle air control (IAC) or throttle position to maintain engine stability. P0551 indicates a rationality fault where the voltage signal is inconsistent with the vehicle's operating state.
Possible Causes
Faulty Power Steering Pressure (PSP) sensor
Wiring harness issues (chafed wires, corrosion, or connector problems)
Incorrect power steering fluid level/type or air in the hydraulic circuit
Mechanical power steering pump failure (insufficient pressure generation)

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
