Technical Description
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0008 is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects a misalignment between the crankshaft position and the camshaft positions on Bank 1. The ECM monitors the correlation between the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor and the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensors. If the alignment deviates beyond a calibrated threshold (typically >4–10 degrees) for a specific duration, the code is stored. This is most commonly caused by a stretched timing chain or worn timing components, leading to a mechanical timing deviation that affects engine efficiency and emissions.
Possible Causes
Stretched or worn timing chain (Common on GM High Feature V6 engines)
Worn timing chain guides or faulty tensioner
Incorrectly installed timing chain (jumped a tooth)
Damaged crankshaft sprocket or reluctor wheel

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
