Technical Description
P0009 is a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) for 'Engine Position System Performance (Bank 2)'. The ECM monitors the relationship between the crankshaft and the camshafts on Bank 2. If the timing alignment exceeds a calibrated limit, this code is triggered. This usually indicates a mechanical timing issue, such as a stretched timing chain or damaged guides, rather than a sensor circuit failure.
Possible Causes
Stretched timing chain (common on GM HFV6 and similar engines)
Worn timing chain guides or faulty chain tensioner
Faulty Variable Valve Timing (VVT) actuator
Damaged or loose crankshaft reluctor ring
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Check engine oil level and condition; poor lubrication affects tensioners and VVT actuators.
- Use an oscilloscope to verify the correlation between crankshaft and camshaft sensor signals.
- Inspect the timing chain stretch using manufacturer-specific diagnostic tools to check phase angles.
- If mechanical misalignment is confirmed: Replace timing chain, tensioners, and guides as a complete kit.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
