Technical Description
P0011 is a generic OBD-II code indicating that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected that the intake camshaft in Bank 1 is in a more advanced position than commanded. The Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system relies on engine oil pressure regulated by a Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) solenoid. The ECU monitors the camshaft position pulse via the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor. If the camshaft timing remains over-advanced relative to the ECU's mapping for a predetermined duration, the code is triggered. This discrepancy often results from mechanical sticking, hydraulic failure, or contaminated engine oil affecting the solenoid's duty-cycle response.
Possible Causes
Dirty, contaminated, or incorrect viscosity engine oil clogging the VVT solenoid
Failed VVT/VCT solenoid (stuck in the open position)
Worn VVT actuator/phaser (internal mechanical failure)
Timing belt/chain installed incorrectly or stretched timing chain

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
