Technical Description
P0012 is a generic OBD-II diagnostic trouble code (DTC) indicating that the Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected the intake camshaft timing for Bank 1 is in an over-retarded position. This means the camshaft timing is lagging behind where it should be according to the ECM's mapping. The Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system relies on engine oil pressure and a pulse-width modulated (PWM) solenoid to advance or retard timing. If the actual position deviates from the target, the ECM sets P0012. This error can lead to increased NOx emissions and poor engine performance.

Dirty or contaminated engine oil (clogged VVT oil passages)
Faulty VVT solenoid (Oil Control Valve)
Incorrect engine oil viscosity
Stretched timing chain or failed chain tensioner causing mechanical timing misalignment

- Check engine oil level and condition. Perform an oil and filter change if service history is unknown.
- Inspect wiring and connectors to the VVT solenoid (measure resistance: typically 7-12 Ohms at 20°C).
- Perform a bi-directional component test using a scan tool to activate the solenoid, or apply 12V directly to verify mechanical movement.
- Measure engine oil pressure with a mechanical gauge to ensure adequate pressure for VVT operation.
- If the fault persists, replace the VVT solenoid or inspect the timing chain and phaser for mechanical wear.
