Technical Description
P0014 is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that the exhaust camshaft timing on Bank 1 is excessively advanced beyond the commanded setpoint. The Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system relies on engine oil pressure modulated by a Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) solenoid to rotate the camshaft phaser. If the actual camshaft position, as reported by the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor, remains more advanced than target for a calibrated duration, the DTC is stored. This fault impacts volumetric efficiency, NOx emissions, and may trigger a reduced power mode to prevent engine damage.
Possible Causes
Dirty engine oil or restricted oil passages in the VVT unit
Faulty VVT solenoid (mechanically stuck or electrical failure)
Incorrect engine oil viscosity
Worn camshaft phaser or skipped timing belt/chain

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
