Technical Description
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0015 is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that the exhaust camshaft (Bank 1) position is more retarded than the commanded setpoint. This involves the Variable Valve Timing (VVT) or Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) system. The ECM controls a solenoid valve that directs oil flow to a phaser on the camshaft. If the camshaft timing remains retarded when it should advance, or if it reacts too slowly, the P0015 code is stored. This logic is based on feedback from the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor and Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor. Common issues include oil viscosity, sludge, or a mechanical failure of the VVT actuator.
Possible Causes
Dirty engine oil or incorrect oil viscosity (clogged VVT passages)
Faulty VVT/VCT solenoid (exhaust side) on Bank 1
Worn camshaft phaser/actuator unit
Low engine oil pressure or clogged oil pickup screen
Improperly timed timing belt or chain
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Check oil level and condition. Perform an oil and filter change if the oil is dirty or the wrong grade is used.
- Inspect the VVT solenoid wiring harness and connector for damage or oil intrusion.
- Measure the resistance of the VVT solenoid using a multimeter. Expect values between 7–12 Ohms depending on the manufacturer.
- Use a diagnostic scan tool to perform an active test (solenoid activation) and monitor real-time camshaft angle data.
- Remove the VVT solenoid and inspect for sludge or metal debris in the small screens. Clean or replace the solenoid as needed.
- If the code persists, perform a mechanical oil pressure test and ultimately inspect/replace the camshaft phaser.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
