Technical Description
The P0018 code is triggered when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects that the mechanical positions of the crankshaft and the intake camshaft on Bank 2 are out of phase. The ECU monitors the alignment between the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor and the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor. If the deviation exceeds a calibrated threshold (typically >10 degrees), the code is stored. This mismatch disrupts ignition timing and fuel injection mapping. This system often involves VVT (Variable Valve Timing) where the ECU modulates oil flow to the cam phaser via a solenoid to achieve target timing.
Possible Causes
Stretched timing chain or jumped timing belt
Failing VVT solenoid (Oil Control Valve) on Bank 2
Dirty or incorrect engine oil viscosity clogging VVT passages
Faulty crankshaft or camshaft sensor or damaged tone ring

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
