Technical Description
P001A is a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) for an open circuit in the Camshaft Profile Control 'A' circuit on Bank 1. This system, often referred to as Variable Valve Lift (VVL), adjusts the lift of the valves to optimize engine efficiency and performance. The ECU monitors the feedback from the control solenoid; if it detects an interruption in the electrical path (no continuity), it triggers this code. It is an electrical fault rather than a mechanical timing issue.
Possible Causes
Faulty Camshaft Profile Control solenoid (internal open circuit)
Damaged wiring harness or corrosion in the connector
Blown fuse or faulty relay providing power to the actuator
Internal Engine Control Module (ECM) fault
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- VISUAL INSPECTION: Inspect the connector for the camshaft solenoid (Bank 1) for oil contamination or corrosion. Check the wiring harness for signs of wear or breakage.
- RESISTANCE TEST: Disconnect the solenoid and measure resistance across the pins using a multimeter. Normal values are typically between 7–15 Ohms. If it reads 'OL' (Open Loop), the solenoid is faulty.
- VOLTAGE TEST: Verify 12V power supply to the solenoid with the ignition on. Check the ground control circuit from the ECM.
- ACTIVE TEST: Use a bidirectional scan tool to command the solenoid ON/OFF and listen for an audible click.
- ACTION: Replace the solenoid or repair the wiring as necessary. Clear codes and perform a test drive.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
