Technical Description
P001D is a generic OBD-II diagnostic trouble code (DTC) indicating that the Engine Control Module (ECM/PCM) has detected an open circuit in the camshaft profile control solenoid circuit for Bank 2. This system adjusts the valve lift or timing (Variable Valve Lift - VVL) by switching between different cam lobes. The ECM monitors the solenoid circuit for continuity; if it detects an open circuit when the solenoid is supposed to be energized or de-energized, the code is stored. Bank 2 refers to the side of the engine that does not contain cylinder number one.
Possible Causes
Faulty camshaft profile control solenoid (internal open coil)
Corrosion or poor connection in the solenoid connector
Wiring harness break or chafed wire between the solenoid and ECM
Faulty Engine Control Module (ECM) failing to drive the circuit
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- VISUAL INSPECTION: Inspect the camshaft solenoid connector on Bank 2 for corrosion, bent pins, or oil intrusion.
- RESISTANCE TEST: Unplug the solenoid and measure resistance across the terminals. Normal values are usually between 10–25 Ohms (check OEM specs). 'O.L' indicates an internal open circuit, requiring replacement.
- WIRING TEST: Check for continuity in the harness between the solenoid and the ECM. Ensure the solenoid receives either 12V power or 5V reference depending on the vehicle's electrical design.
- ACTIVE TEST: Use a bi-directional scan tool to command the solenoid ON/OFF and listen for a click, or use an oscilloscope to verify the PWM (Duty-cycle) signal from the ECM.
- COMPONENT REPLACEMENT: If wiring is intact but the solenoid fails resistance or activation tests, replace the camshaft profile control solenoid.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
