Technical Description
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P001E is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects an open circuit in the camshaft profile control system for Bank 2. This system (often referred to as VVT or VVL) adjusts the lift or timing of the valves to optimize volumetric efficiency. The ECM monitors the duty cycle and current flow to the control solenoid. If an open circuit is detected via the sense line (lack of continuity), the ECM will disable the profile switching and store the code.
Possible Causes
Open circuit in wiring or corrosion in the solenoid connector
Faulty camshaft profile control solenoid (internal open coil)
Blown fuse for the variable valve timing system
Internal Engine Control Module (ECM) failure
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Inspect wiring and connectors at the Bank 2 camshaft solenoid for chafing or corrosion.
- Fuse Check: Verify all fuses related to the VVT/VVL system are intact.
- Resistance Measurement: Disconnect the solenoid and measure resistance. Normal values are typically 7–15 Ohms. Infinite resistance (OL) confirms a faulty solenoid.
- Voltage Test: Check for 12V supply voltage at the connector with ignition ON or during an output test.
- Advanced Diagnosis: Use an oscilloscope to verify the PWM control signal from the ECM.
- Component Replacement: Replace the solenoid if internal resistance is out of spec or open.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
