Technical Description
P0022 is a generic OBD-II diagnostic trouble code (DTC) indicating that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected that the intake camshaft timing for Bank 2 is more 'retarded' than the commanded position. The system utilizes Variable Valve Timing (VVT) technology, regulated by oil pressure through an Oil Control Valve (OCV). If the camshaft timing does not advance to the target angle within a specific period, the ECU triggers this code. Bank 2 refers to the side of the engine that does not contain cylinder #1.
Possible Causes
Dirty or incorrect engine oil (wrong viscosity or sludge clogging VVT passages)
Faulty Oil Control Valve (OCV) / Camshaft Solenoid
Failed VVT Phaser (mechanical failure/stuck in retarded position)
Worn timing chain or faulty chain tensioner affecting timing

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
