Technical Description
P0024 is a generic OBD-II diagnostic trouble code (DTC) indicating that the Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected the exhaust camshaft (B) in Bank 2 is over-advanced beyond the commanded timing. The Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system adjusts camshaft timing using oil pressure modulated by a solenoid. If the camshaft timing exceeds the maximum limit or fails to return to the base position, the ECM triggers this code. This affects engine efficiency and emission control (NOx reduction).
Possible Causes
Dirty or contaminated engine oil (clogging oil passages)
Failing Variable Valve Timing (VVT) solenoid (Bank 2, exhaust side)
Incorrect engine oil viscosity
Mechanical failure of the camshaft phaser unit
Wiring issues or poor electrical connections to the solenoid
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Check engine oil level and condition. Perform an oil and filter change if the oil is dirty or has incorrect viscosity.
- Perform a solenoid function test using a diagnostic scanner (Bi-directional control). Listen for an audible click when activated.
- Measure the resistance of the VVT solenoid (Bank 2). It should typically be between 7–12 Ohms (verify against OEM specs).
- Inspect the wiring harness and connector for signs of oil intrusion or corrosion.
- If the fault persists after oil service and solenoid testing, inspect the camshaft phaser for mechanical failure.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
