Technical Description
P0028 is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that the variable valve timing (VVT) for the intake camshaft on Bank 2 is not performing within calibrated parameters. The ECM monitors the camshaft position relative to the crankshaft. If the phase shift does not match the target value within a specific timeframe, or if the solenoid operation is erratic, the code triggers. The system typically utilizes engine oil pressure controlled by a Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) solenoid. This code points towards a range or performance issue rather than a complete circuit failure.
Possible Causes
Dirty engine oil or incorrect oil viscosity blocking oil passages
Faulty VVT solenoid (Oil Control Valve) on Bank 2
Worn VVT actuator/phaser
Low engine oil pressure or clogged oil pickup screen

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
