Technical Description
P002D is a generic OBD-II diagnostic trouble code (DTC) indicating that the Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a high voltage condition in the Camshaft Profile Control circuit for Bank 2. This circuit controls the solenoid responsible for varying the valve lift or timing (e.g., VVT, VANOS, VTEC). A 'High' circuit code typically suggests a short to voltage in the wiring harness or an internal high resistance/open circuit within the solenoid itself. The ECM monitors the duty cycle and current flow; if it detects that the voltage remains high when it should be pulled low, the code is triggered, and the system often enters a fail-safe mode.
Possible Causes
Short to voltage in the wiring harness for the camshaft actuator
Faulty camshaft control solenoid (internal electrical failure, Bank 2)
Corroded or loose electrical connectors causing high resistance
Internal Engine Control Unit (ECU) failure
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check the wiring and connector for the Bank 2 solenoid for signs of fraying, melting, or corrosion.
- Resistance Test (Ohm): Disconnect the solenoid and measure internal resistance with a multimeter. Typical values are between 7-15 Ohms. Infinite resistance indicates an open circuit.
- Voltage Test (Volt): Check for short to voltage in the harness. With the ignition on and solenoid disconnected, measure the signal wire. A constant 12V reading when the ECU is not commanding it indicates a short.
- Functional Test: Use a scan tool to perform an active test (bi-directional control) on the solenoid and listen for an audible click.
- Replacement: If the solenoid fails electrical tests or internal resistance is out of spec, replace the unit and clear the DTC.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
